Biography

Children, Incorporated has a rich history spanning nearly 43 years. In 1964, Mrs. Jeanne Clarke Wood of Richmond, VA envisioned a nonprofit that would allow indigent children to escape the cycle of poverty. While researching options for such an organization, she traveled to Guatemala, where she witnessed many children living in hunger and deprivation. Upon her return to Virginia, Mrs. Wood established Children, Incorporated.

The Guatemala site that Mrs. Wood visited in 1964 became Children, Incorporated’s first project. It included 95 children, all of whom Mrs. Wood and her staff linked with sponsors. By means of the sponsors’ monthly donations, the children received funds for clothing, food, and other necessities. Children, Incorporated also ensured that they were attending school.

Children Incorporated has expanded substantially since the original Guatemala site was established. Today, the organization serves more than 17,000 children at 352 project sites in 24 countries. In addition to facilitating sponsorships, it funds special projects like clinics, schools, orphanages, and playgrounds. Since its founding, Children, Incorporated has provided its children with over $82 million in aid.
